Michael Bayer has been an outdoorsman and water enthusiast his entire life - fishing, skiing, lifeguarding. In 1999- while directing a documentary about pro bass fishing (“Bass Man”), he had a revelation. “Here I was, driving around the country following these fishing pros, jumping into $50,000 bass boats and racing around lakes for a monetary prize. I felt a need to simplify my water experience and re-connect with nature.” He bought a used kayak and the rest is history. He now owns a fleet. In 2006 he won the Angler of the Year title fishing the Ultimate Kayak Trail, and the same title in 2007 fishing the Kayak Anglers Tournament Series. “At this stage in my life, I want to be on the water. I don’t care what I’m doing..kayaking, paddling on a board, fishing out of a canoe- it doesn’t matter. It’s a lifestyle.” Guiding was a natural evolution. “Now that I’m involved with Hobie, lecturing at fishing seminars and clinics, I’ve come to the realization that I really enjoy this teaching thing.” His motto is “Keep it simple-Keep if fun.” And because to love the outdoors is to fight to keep it clean, Michael is actively pursuing local conservation issues. “I can’t sit back and watch our lakes and rivers get trashed.”
